Having spent a small part of the afternoon with Connan, one thing was made very apparent and that was he's a lovely bloke with a surreal take on life and his own musical creativity.

This video made for Phantasy (Erol Alkan's label) is a little look into what shapes him as an artist by picking his top five tracks. It was difficult to define his music by just picking five tracks, even Connan found it hard, But we gave it a bloody good go!!!!

I've been a long-time fan of Maurice Fulton, and Mu (sorry I mean Mutsumi) and once got threatened to have the police called on me at an after party whilst playing Paris Hilton. An amazing juxtaposition between having an old school Manchester landlord yelling at me, whilst Mu's chicken noises in that track bellowed behind, made it difficult to hide how humorous i found that situation. He didn't laugh.

Just realised that i never got round to telling you about which tracks stood out last Friday at Look.See.Here. Well, it was these ones:

First up KZA - Aneugalam (Endless Flight), a real attention-grabbing party starter. The deep bass... the flamenco guitar... the teasing horns. It all just works.

Next another one that worked further into the night was the Clap Rules remix of a release by DFA. Hand claps, computer game synth, and light funk guitar all strut along politely until... wwwwooooooouuuuurrrrkthzx xzx kx.. VOCALS. Time to get yer stomp on.

People like Bill Brewster on his DJ History Podcasts have been talking about this for weeks, but it now seems official enough for Eddy Grant to take them to court; Gorillaz have sampled his Time Warp (a Space Zombi Bingo favourite) and not given him the credit for it.

Before the release EMI, who represent both artists, apparently even donned the rubber gloves and took the track to a musicologist to determine whether it was in fact an original composition or straight-up sample/copy. Read The Guardian's article on it here.

A Number of Names - Share Vari (Inst.)

Amazingly it was originally released in 1981, then again in 1982 with this New Wave type of track on the B-Side (Via. Those City Nights blog). It is often claimed to be the first techno record, or first Detroit techno record, or sounds Italo... It doesn't matter what what you want to call. It is just a great record.

Have a look at this video too, filmed on a local Detroit show called The Scene, i originally thought it was a video that someone had re-edited and stuck over the top of the tune. But no it's an original recording.

Following on from yesterday's heroes of Soundcloud post, here's another chap that works harder than a Blackpool donkey giving rides to an American family... uphill. Like Touchsoul, I'm amazed at the amount of edits and remixes he puts out every week.

In fact one of the very first posts I wrote for this blog last year was a mix that featured one of my favourite edit's of his; Tele Music - Baby's Band (Leo Zero Edit).

He's also an accomplished graphic designer, who has worked for a long time with DJHistory.com designing many of their logo's and Secret Weapons covers.

But it's his music that really grabs my attention, just today he's uploaded a version of Ce Ce Penniston's - Finally that absolutely rocks. Perfect for that time when it's late and you're playing deep but need to bring the crowd up, or even early on to kick things off. He's very versatile too, here's a psychedelic 'wig-out' that i really quite enjoy.

I've been digging the work of Touchsoul recently. He's an edit machine, sometimes 2-3 of his edits drop into my inbox everyday. It's not annoying, I like this much better than being told about the savings i can make on Percocet. How do they know how much i spend on it anyway?!

Not only is he busy with his edits he writes a very good blog too. Go follow both his blog and his Soundcloud page. I am quite jealous of the people who live in Sunderland, i imagine going to one of his nights is a secret sweaty basement affair (even if it's in a bar). Here's how he describes his influences.

"Cuts featured here on this page are more than likely restructured for my own personal, selfish sensibilities and hopefully the results are subtle, as I'll try to retain the flavour of the original composition...

My audio diet consists of the best, in my opinion, disco, boogie, soul, house and funk. Although I love all types of music the edits featured here will be more dancefloor orientated...I hope some of them work out for people."

Holy balls! That was fast, too fast for some who's wheels seemed to be replaced by shoes, flat shoes. With no wheels. Shame on you.

Today i wake up with one leg bigger than the other from going around in one direction for too long. It had an incredible atmosphere, there were the crazy experienced skaters (i'm guessing) from Detroit, spinning and breakin' in the middle, newbies falling down around the outside, but that didn't matter everyone was having fun. Even those with shoes on.

I am mad excited for this, not only is it a too rare appearance by Moodymann in England, he's also bringing a bunch of Detroit's roller-boogiers old enough to play board games (aged 8-80) over from Detroit.

"Roller disco culture is a passion for mythical deep house renegade Moodymann. Known for preserving the rich heritage of Afro-American (sub-)culture with the utmost respect, he’s done more to keep the roller disco phenomenon alive than any other human being on the planet with his Detroit regular Soul Skate. Hello there, long time no type. My apologies for being away for so long, procrastination got in the way. So i thought i'd better write something wholly original, against the grain and truly rebellious... or to keep in the (Christmas) spirit of this much talked about subject i could just join in with everyone else and add to the X-Factor Vs. Rage Against The Machine... machine.

Aren't all Christmas number ones the product of some sort of campaign anyway?

Either through a huge advertising/playlist push paid for by a major record label or whether it is just a decent Christmas single that connects to most people, so much so, they go and buy it.

After some long and hard research looking on Wikipedia and one more site, it looks that 1984 was the first big battle for the Christmas number one position by two songs that were actually about the festive season. That year Band Aid and all of it's charity goodness beat Wham! to number one.

The one i can personally remember as a child was when the nation got behind Cliff Richard's 'Mistletoe And Wine' to give it a huge push to knock Kylie & Jason just in time. After all we can't have Antipodean summer vibes winning over our annual sleety season.

In 1993 after 'true music fans' got bored of Take That reaching number one with EVERY release that year, decided to keep them off the Christmas top-spot by rallying together in the spirit of punk and buying Mr Blobby.

A few years after that Spice Girls got their first Christmas number one with 2 Become 1. They did it again the following year narrowly beating the true music lover's track of choice - Teletubbies 'Say Eh-Oh!'.

The year after that they again won, much to the chagrin of the record buying rebel's who paid hand-over-fist for Chef's Chocolate Salty Balls.

It was then in 2005 that the evil, dark-overlord of bubblegum pop began his reign at the top for many, many years, the rebel forces tried to destroy the trouser-nippled one by enrolling a couple of Jazz farm-hands into their alliance with the underdog entry 'JCB Song'. But it wasn't meant to be. The empire's hold was strong, even The Old Republic warriors Take That couldn't overcome the despot's reign the year after.

What followed then was an odd tactical approach of using dead singers. It failed. Twice. However what appeared to be the spirit of 'good music being better than manufactured pop music' was there as the Jeff Buckley original made it number two. Next time Cowell, next time.

Which brings us up to this year.

This year particularly has seen a huge surge in the success of Social Media, ever since Stephen Fry mentioned Twitter on Friday Night With Jonathan Ross, randoms and spammers have a new way to vaguely 'follow' what you're doing and try to get you to watch Britney Spears do blowjobs.

Facebook: You now know when that person you can barely remember from school goes Christmas shopping (October, yes she's the self-proclaimed "mad one", "if she was in Friends, she'd be Phoebe, cos she's just mad."), and they now know that you "really enjoyed that pie last night".

It's also a way for you to get involved in groups and campaigns like the "If i get loads of people in this group i'll name my kid Spider-Man" or "I'm don't care about anything but i'll physically push this button and join this group"or even "Get Rage Against The Machine to number one for xmas" So these two social media platforms have allowed campaigns to form and for people to feel like they have a voice. They can shout out with a Rebel Yell against the other forms of mass media. Most prominently this year we've seen things like 'twynch mobs' forming around Jan Moir's homophobic rant about what she thought Stephen Gately's life consisted of, and the Trafigura cover up, and the Iranian Election, and the...

I digress. Basically my point is that the Christmas Number One spot has for the most part, been the result of campaigns; a mass audience have won some years and another mass audience have won other years.

So who has benefitted from all this brouhaha?

It could be that monetarily speaking the real winner is Sony and therefore Simon Cowell. Both tracks are after all signed to the same label.

Or, maybe it's charity who are the winners, Shelter are after all receiving the profits from the sales of Rage's single (which you can still give to without buying the song).

Or, it could be that music and the pop charts are the real winners. EVERYONE has a reignited interest in them again... For a week.

I remember following the pop charts when i was a child and illegally taping the songs i liked from them. I remember 'home taping is killing music, and i remember wondering why there was a record button if we weren't allowed to use it. I also remember going out and buying tunes that i couldn't get because my sellotaped radio-controlled car aerials that i attached to the radio couldn't get a decent enough signal from pirate radio stations.

This year people such as Simon Cowell have melodramatically cried that it's the death of the Music Industry due to the big, bad Internet and EVERYONE illegally downloading. They've gone and got their dad, who's bigger than yours, to push for a bill in Parliament aimed at cutting off entire households from the entire Internet. It's ironic that the same EVERYONE became part of a campaign to buy and legally download enough of a particular track to overturn a mogul-esque character with his own tried and tested campaign for Christmas Number One.

Or, maybe people just like a bit of a change?

I spent the past year living in Sydney and whilst it was a hot, sunny climate surrounded by “awesome” beaches and a laid-back attitude to everything (except surfing), I couldn't help but miss the music and music history that is archived within the grey, rain-filled skies and old mill architecture of Manchester.

I did however take one book with me that i kept as a 'Smash Glass In Case of Emergency Missing Manchester' moments that i just knew would happen Dave Haslam's 'Manchester, England'. I know it's been out for a few years now, and since then he has written a couple more tomes of high critical praise (Adventure On The Wheels Of Steel & Not Abba), but i'd just never got round to reading it. In a way i'm really glad i didn't; it was the perfect read whilst being away from the place that i'd grown to love so much.

I was up in Manchester for a weekend during the Manchester International Festival. Whilst in the Festival Pavilion watching the Micron DJs, the author of the book that filled the hole being away from Manchester dug came and sat right next to me, right there, next to me. I couldn't help being a bit of a fan and had to tell him how much i loved that book. Inside i couldn't help but think i may have looked a bit like Jim Carrey in The Mask (the bit where his jaw drops on the table - awestruck... not the eyes as love-hearts though, that's just going too far!). He's one of the original Manchester house DJs that i never got to see. I could write a list full of hyperbolic statements reeling off his achievements in Djing, music journalism, and general Manchester stalwartness but i won't; i don't think the internet is big enough!

Instead here's an interview he agreed to do for Space Zombi Bingo.

You're always a busy chap, what are you up to at the minute?

My diary is varied, even maybe confused. I have a ton of DJ gigs which include a couple of Festival dates, a gig in Paris, a gig in Sunderland, a charity event to raise money for Christie's Hospital, and a party at the Town Hall; on Sept 9th I'm a keynote speaker at a conference on post-punk in Leeds; I'm arranging a few of my own 'Sweet Sensation' nights; and I'm trying to arrange a mini-tour in America as I have two gigs waiting for me in New York and one in Cleveland (Ohio) but that might be February or March next year now I think.

What do you personally think has been the biggest change in Clubs/Clubbers/Djing during your tenure?

It's all gone very overground. There were always big commercial clubs, back in the early 1980s - I never went to them, as mainstream music has never really appealed to me and they all had dress codes, you'd have to wear a tie to get in and stuff - and then there were very small credible and semi-credible clubs. Now there's still a big commercial scene (which still doesn't appeal) but now there are dozens of great credible and semi-credible clubs and club nights too, with international DJs and clued-up promoters and huge scenes. The quality and quantity of DJs and clubs amazes me now; we had so little 25 or 30 years ago, you were really lucky if you found a decent club night to go to.

As a purveyor and supporter of new musical talent from Manchester do you think that given Manchester's past musical glories, there is a kind of unspoken pressure placed on the up and coming local bands and club nights to be 'the next big Manchester' whatever?

Not really, maybe more so for the bands. For club nights the biggest pressure is just to make them work and get the people in.

Does this pressure on bands also add an air of short-attention-span-itis to the major labels and music journalists who would quickly write them off instead of giving them the time they need to develop?

I'm not sure there's a word "short- attention-span-itis"! But I know what you mean. But who cares? I generally believe that the power of the press in music is easy to over-exaggerate. You just do what you do, and if you believe in it, so what? Success, if it comes, will always more about word of mouth. The press usually follow rather than lead.

So what bands and scenes are you into at the moment then?

Bands in Manchester; Airship, Delphic. Nights in Manchester; 'Contort Yourself', 'The Devil's Jukebox' and 'Here Come the Girls'. Generally, I like Fujiya & Miyagi. I like the Sonar Kollectiv label. And DJ Nic Fanciulli.

What do you think about Manchester's past band-based heroes turning to the decks, almost as if they are cashing in on their past glories? Andy Rourke, Peter Hook and especially Shaun Ryder's appearance at South a couple of years ago where he handed CD's to Clint Boon.

I guess they're allowed to cash-in. And people are allowed to go and see them. I mean, it's not like anyone is dying as a result of this is it???

Very true but as a professional DJ what do you think of 'celebrity' DJ's?

There are some celebrities I would like to see DJ; it's an interesting way of seeing what kind of people they are, how brave they are, or how idiotic. I'd like to hear Vincent Gallo DJ for example; is he a celeb??

Do you think it's at all plausible, in this time of FaceSpaceInternets, that Manchester or anywhere for that matter could have a scene again that's directly linked to a place or City? For example – will there ever be another 'Madchester'?

The idea of community is something a lot more fluid now, yes, you're right, but at the same time, people also recognise that social interaction in the real world is more authentic in some way. In recent years, for example, people have gravitated towards Berlin; because there's a sense that like-minded or creative people or whatever are there, and so although they're people you might track down on the internet, actually sharing a physical space and walking the same streets with them seems to have a real attraction. Also, as a kind of second point, I'm not sure Madchester was really to do with geography; it was more to do with an attitude, a sense of social and musical freedom.

What do you think to its ever changing skyline and the vast amount of shoe-box-sized flats popping up everywhere? Surely this is destroying Manchester's charm and aesthetic or do you think its time Manchester had the facelift it deserves?

A lot of the flats are pretty pokey and they don't really do much for me, but it's not like Manchester is the only place where urban planning or urban regeneration or property developers or whatever have changed the city. I was reading one of the last interviews that the American writer/DJ/journalist Studs Terkel gave and he lived in Chicago for seven or eight decades and looking back over his life he said that the biggest thing has been the homogenisation of our big cities; the loss of individuality in the cities. Big business, multi-nationals, major brands, corporate finance etc - they're not interested in a creative bohemian weirdo world. It's always about cash.

How's the 'Haslam for Mayor' campaign coming along?!

Ha! Well, I didn't start the campaign, people started signing up to it (on Facebook) and that's the first I knew about it. I've done a manifesto though and I've sent it round to a few people. A few big cheeses at the City Council have read it, but they don't seem perturbed. I also actually met the real Lord Mayor last month at an art gallery opening; she's called Alison Firth. She was very nice, she said she loved my 'Manchester, England' book and often read from it when called upon to make speeches. She insisted someone take her photo with me. She was so nice I didn't have the heart to tell her I wanted her job.

If you think that there are a whole bunch of questions i should have asked about his days playing at The Hacienda and stuff like that, then i urge you to stop being so lazy and go have a look at his very thorough website where all of those questions have been answered before.

This post is all about Drenched Recordings. Ran by a long-time friend James Ellis/Feline 9, it's an independent House label based in Manchester that he established at the turn of this last Millennia.
It's recently been going through a few changes, so I caught up with him to find out just what the devil's been going on...

1) You started Drenched in 2000, at the time it was the height of 'Superclub Culture'. Claims were being publicised that turntables were out-selling guitars, CDJs were only in the bigger clubs – how did you go about publicising your label and releases back then?
I was at Uni in Manchester when I started Drenched so everything was done with minimum of expense. The possibility of using promo companies or even buying proper 12" mailer envelopes were totally out of the window, so used to hand wrap the 50 or so promos I had for each release with brown paper and tape from the post office and put a photocopied A4 reaction sheet in there. There was no real promotional masterplan, I'd just phone around other record labels and get the addresses of artists and DJs I thought would like the release. It's amazing how helpful people are when you're asking them if you can send them a record for free! French DJ and producer David Duriez used to run a private forum for "professionals" in a time before blogs and myspace and all that stuff that really helped me get in touch with all sorts of similar minded people all over the world. I was pretty young at the time so found it a bit strange chatting to all these people I considered to be my peers, but everyone was cool and really friendly.

2) I remember that, initially, CDJs were snobbily looked down on because “the sound quality is nowhere near as good as vinyl, so you won't catch me using one of them.” There have been huge changes in technology since Drenched has been running, it's become acceptable to play MP3s now that many people are using Serato and Ableton now - even Frank Broughton and Bill Brewster say in 'How To DJ Properly' that you “shouldn't play anything less than 192kbps”, which is a tiny amount of information compared to vinyl. What are your thoughts on the 'digital revolution'?
I think it's great - it's given DJs the freedom to be a lot more creative within their sets using loops and edits - there's only so much you can do with 2 turntables. As a producer I can finish a track or remix, burn it to a CD and play it out that night to see how it sounds on a big system before going with the final decision on the release.

3) But how has file sharing affected your label?
I remember speaking to someone in a club years ago and they said to me that they'd just downloaded the whole back catalogue and really liked the stuff that I was putting out. This guy would have never gone out and bought any releases on vinyl and probably would have never heard anything otherwise.
Nowadays it's a bit different though... there will always be people who will want to buy stuff because they don't know how / can't be arsed to find it other ways. I don't really care to be honest with you.

4) There are also a whole lot of online specialist MP3 shops like Beatport, Juno, Bleep, Delsin and a whole lot of others too. Which ones do you favour and why?
Beatport's the best, they're the only one to really bother with for house and techno, I think most label owners would agree.

5) How are you releasing tunes now – are you completely digital or do you still release on vinyl?
Digital only now - I do miss the excitement of getting the first batch of test pressings through the door and hearing the the speaker crackle as you drop the needle on, but I can't afford to press vinyl or be bothered with all the distribution hassles. I'd rather spend my time making some music than chasing some guy for money.

6) There have been quite a few big trend changes in house production from the Filtered French House sound of the late 90's, through to the Minimal Berlin-esque sound that was prominent last year. As a producer and label-owner do you see and use change as a good thing?
Change is essential. The Drenched music policy has always been fairly loose, so I've never really fallen into the trap of being pigeon-holed into what's the "cool" trend this week. Looking over the back catalogue we have gone through all sorts of genre shifts over the years - from deep to vocal to techno to minimal and back again. There's been DJs as diverse as Sneak, Atomic Hooligan and just recently Joris Voorn all license tracks for compilations. I'm really into the new wave of house stuff that's around at the moment, a big mix of all sorts of genres and sub-genres past and present. The guys at 20:20, Freerange and Rekids are all putting out consistent quality at the moment.

7) You've now gone back to the original goal of Drenched by concentrating on producing and releasing your own productions. What was behind that decision?
When I first started making tracks I'd always try to mimic the sound of the label that I was going to send it to and I never really got anywhere. I'd sent a few demos to a distributor and they suggested that they would be able to sell the track and put me in touch with a mastering house and pressing plant. I did the first 4 releases and then started to receive some really good demos so just started to put out the ones that I thought fitted in with the kind of stuff I was doing. I've had a couple of years of not really being inspired to do much with the label so am just taking a step back, revamping the current Drenched sound to move on to the next phase.

8) Are you still going to release outside productions too?
Yes of course - i do listen to all the demos I get, some of them are terrible but they're usually just the pop trance. Still get a lot of electro which I think has had its day now. No more electro please!!

9) What equipment do you currently use when Djing?
A cross between CDJs, Final Scratch and Ableton. They all have their pros and cons... I probably favour CDJs as they're the most reliable and versatile in a club situation. You can get some great mixes out of Ableton but I think it does take a lot of the 'fun' factor out of it - is pretty boring staring a screen especially as that's what you've been doing in the office all day.

10) You've done a fantastic mix ahead of your gig at Look-See-Hear this Saturday (19th July 2009. East Village, 89 Great Eastern Street EC2A 3HX)– Is this representative of what sound are you currently into?
I'm into all sorts out music from all sorts of eras, so when I play out depending on the type of party will either be upfront house and techno, or a mish-mash of styles and genres. I played a 6 and a half hour set for the guys behind Look.See.Here last year and unless you're in an after-party situation I just get bored playing the same type of music for that period of time.

I used to live in Manchester for a whole lot of years, during them whole lot of years i loved dancing to dirty soul, with "a red light, and a feeling" in a sweaty basement. And it was all thanks to The Unabombers and their Electric Chair detonations (RIP).
They have since grown into a live act (Elektrons) and diversified (Electric Elephant - Festival in Croatia, Electrik - a bar in Chorlton, Manchester) but kept the same sensibilites as when they first started down The Red-light Road.
I managed to catch up with the wizards ahead of Electric Elephant to find out what they've been up to.

1. What have Elektrons been up to recently? Can we expect a new EP or album coming soon?
We've been very busy opening a new bar in Manchester called Electrik.....so we are only just about ready to get back in the studio. Saying that we have done remixes,with the crazy p mix getting some really good props. We're very happy with it.

2. I once read that on the last album you made Pete Simpson stand in a stair-well and sing to get an authentic reverb – any new analogue production techniques you've invented recently?
We would never claim to be the inventors of techniques but we're always up for something new or unusual like putting a Durex over a microphone hanging it in a full bottle of milk for a special bass sound but that's giving away our secret weapon so enough of that. . But busy in the studio with some new productions off the back of our remixes for Crazy P and Chaz Jankel to name a few.

3. Electric Chair, Elektrons, Electric Elephant, Electric Souls... All these different Electric branches – does it help to keep it fresh and new or do you naturally have a short attention span?!
It is absolutely essential to keep on moving. Our philosophy of ' BOMB THE PAST' is about being creative and not resting on your laurels. We ended Electric Chair so we could leave the basements and go into the forest in Croatia and keep that spirit alive. Creativity needs new life.

4. Has there been a single moment, so far, in the Electric history that sums up the Electric Spirit?
Rediscovering the spirit at Electric Elephant was as crazy and passionate as ever. It was life affirming. It meant that the vibe was still alive and kicking.

5. What would 'start of Electric Chair' Luke and Justin think of present-day Luke and Justin?
Exactly the fucking same.

6. This year's Electric Elephant has an amazing line up; both Live and Djs – any personal highlights?

7. What would be the Top ASBO inducing moment of past Electric Elephants and what new ones do you expect for this year?

Yep, pretty cheesy title, i could have topped it by saying something 'Whispers?! Shout about it more like!' Or...

Actually no, no more puns, it'd end up sounding like an American TV news piece.

I've just seen this classic video over at DJ's Delight and can't stop watching it, any video that classisly starts with a group of blokes hiding behind newspapers to perv on a girl always gets my attention. They did miss a trick tho, why didn't they just cut eye-holes into the papers? The pervee never notices!

The track jogged my mindbox back to a more well known song by them called 'And the Beat Goes On' that i first heard on a Daft Punk Essential mix from 1997, hold on which came out first; that or 'Miami' by Will Smith?
That digression's by-the-by, I remember the essential mix was amazing, it was in a time when Sasha was doing 120 minute overlays in his mixes, Paul Van Dyke had all the Scallies munted in the main rooms etc. Daft Punk did this mix as if they just weren't bothered by the geeky technicalities that the Paul Oakenfold followers semed to be.
It played like a list of their favourite songs would, with just a crossfade from one to the next, some of them weren't even beat-matched - In your face conformity UUHHH!
It made such a refreshing change to hear that, compared to the dirge spread by the likes of "Dangerous" Dave Pearce.
